Get Organized and Take the Hassle Out of Shopping
Thursday, January 15th, 2009A lot of people dread grocery shopping and it is little wonder. First the mad fight through busy traffic just to get to the supermarket. Then the hassle of finding somewhere to park that is not so far away from the stores entrance that you feel like you need your hiking boots on before you even attempt it. And even if you do manage to avoid the traffic and find a parking space that is relatively near to the door, supermarkets are often so busy that it is a real chore just to get near what you want on the shelves. Then there is the torturous process of guiding your trolley between the other shoppers and to the checkout.
Stressful!
Not always, I admit, but it is too often the case.
And that is not always the end of it. How many times have you got home, struggled through the door with your shopping, and been ready to put your feet up with a nice cup of tea, only to realize that you have forgotten to buy something. Maybe even the tea! Now that really is stressful. Or perhaps you suddenly find that coupon you have been saving that would have reduced the cost of your shop today. You know the one; it’s the one that expires tomorrow. I’ll say it again: stressful!
Nobody likes to feel stressed, but life isn’t perfect and stress is, unfortunately, something that is impossible to avoid completely, but there are ways in which we can limit the damage and sometimes all it takes is a little forward planning.
Not everyone bothers to take a shopping list with them when they go to the supermarket, and that is one of their first mistakes. Make out a list and take it with you. Take a pen as well. If you cross off the items on your list as you put them into your cart you are less likely to forget something, or pick them up twice.
Having a list and a pen with you is only part of the story though. The process of organizing your shopping list begins at home and can start many days before your designated ’shopping day.’
Try and keep a notepad and pen handy in the kitchen and when you run out of things write it down straight away, before you forget. It is hard to keep hubby sweet when there is no sugar in his tea and it does not take long to add things to your list. As the week progresses and your shopping day looms ever closer you might find that you have quite a long list. But let’s take a look at that list, you have been writing things down as and when stock became low or ran out: oranges, tea, furniture polish bananas, toilet rolls, cornflakes…
The list is reminding you what to get, but it is in the wrong order. If, like most people, you tend to frequent the same supermarket, you will no doubt be familiar with its layout. If the fruit and vegetables are just through the door, you don’t want to pick up your oranges, then trail half way around the store for tea and furniture polish only to have to head back to the fruit and vegetables later on to pick up your bananas. So just take a moment to think and plan your route through the store. And as you do this cross off the items on your list and write them down on a second list that is planned around your route through the store. If, like me, you find yourself in the fruit and vegetables section first of all, check list number one, find all the fruit and vegetables and transfer it to list number two. The next place I would pass is the fish counter, closely followed by the bakery and so I add things to my second list in this order. Perhaps this all sounds like a lot of trouble, but it saves me a lot of trouble later on. I write my lists at home, where I can sit and think and have a cup of tea (never ran out yet). Busy supermarkets offer too many distractions though. I like to be in and out. I have route, I have a list, I have a pen and I get home to my cup of tea a lot faster than most people do, so I am happy, hubby remains sweet and all is well with the world.
